Digital
vs 35mm film Print Sizes
An
important consideration when printing your digital images is to
match the height to width ratio (or "aspect ratio") of
your digital camera. Traditional 35mm film (36 x 24mm) has an aspect
ratio of 3:2 (one and a half times wider than its height) which
prints proportionately onto 4" x 6" photographic paper.
Digital cameras have a 4:3 aspect ratio, this means that images
printed on 4"x 6" paper (3:2 aspect ratio) will have the
top or bottom of the picture cropped or blank vertical strips down
each side.
At Snappy Snaps
Ashford we offer all the options, we can print your digital images
to fit the traditional 4" x 6" size which fits the popular
sizes for albums and frames but your picture will be cropped to
fit or we can leave blank vertical strips. If you choose the Digital
print size of 4" x 5.3" you will get the complete image
you captured through your digital camera.

Getting
more technical
How to establish
the aspect ratio of your digital camera. If for example you have
a 3 Megapixel camera with a resolution of 2048 x 1536, you divide
the larger number by the smaller, so 2048 ÷ 1536 = 1.33 which
will print proportionately onto a 4" x 5.3" paper size
(5.3 ÷ 4 = 1.33) or 4:3 aspect ratio. If your calculation
comes to 1.5 you can print to a 4" x 6" paper size. (e.g.
6 ÷ 4 = 1.5 or 3:2 aspect ratio).
